Jenna Oliver doesn't have time to get involved with one boy, let alone two. All Jenna wants is to escape her evaporating small town and her alcoholic mother. She's determined to go to college and create a life that is wholly hers-one that isn't tainted by her family's past. But when the McAlister twins move to town and Jenna gets involved with both of them, she learns the life she planned may not be the one she gets. Ian McAlister doesn't want to start over; he wants to remember. Ian can't recall a single thing from the last three months-and he seems to be losing more memories every day. When he meets Jenna, Ian finally feels that he could start to be normal again. However, the secret Ian can't remember is the one Luke McAlister can't forget. Luke has always lived in the shadow of his twin brother until Jenna stumbles into his life. She sees past who he's supposed to be, and her kiss brings back the spark that life stole. Even though Luke feels like Ian deserves her more, Luke can't resist Jenna, and their passion is the trigger that makes Ian's memory return. Jenna, Ian, and Luke are about to learn there are only so many secrets you can keep before the truth comes to reclaim you.

A small-town girl can't choose between two twin brothers in this psychological romance. Jenna feels stifled in the little town of Solitude, Ark., where she's lived all her life with her mother. Jenna dreams only of leaving home and living in the wider world when 17-year-old twin boys and their mom buy Jenna's recently deceased grandfather's house. First she meets Ian, a straight-A student who has been trying to reclaim his memories, mostly lost three months ago after a traumatic event. Then she meets Luke, who insists he's the bad twin, always in trouble. However, Jenna can't help being more attracted to Luke, although she knows she's going behind Ian's back to meet him. Complicating matters is Jenna's mom, who suffers from the family tendency to drink and for whom Jenna feels responsible. Just when Jenna firmly decides she loves Luke, Luke tells her what really happened the night Ian lost his memory, a secret that changes everything. Guillory writes the entire novel through the shifting though identical first-person viewpoints of the three adolescents--readers will have to pay strict attention to chapter subheadings. Frequent nature-inspired metaphors ("the shadows [of the woods] swallowed me") add depth. If the psychology gets a bit too convoluted toward the end, much of the story remains believable. Lengthy but ultimately intriguing. (Psychological romance. 12-16)

Gr 9 Up-Beautiful, athletic Jenna is unhappy with her life in small town Solitude, Arkansas. Her grandfather, with whom she was very close, recently passed away, and Jenna's mother has turned to alcohol to deal with her grief. In order to ensure an escape from her unhappy life post-high school, Jenna works two jobs to earn money for college. When identical twins Ian and Luke move to town, Jenna is intrigued. Despite their matching good looks, the brothers couldn't be more different: Ian is the responsible, levelheaded one; Luke is wild and reckless. But there is something strange about the them: Ian has amnesia but doesn't know why, and Luke knows the cause but won't share it. This book has a shocking plot twist that will keep readers engaged and eager to discover what secrets the twins are hiding. While this could be classified as a romance, the absorbing narrative and fast-moving mystery will appeal to a much broader audience. A definite purchase for most high school libraries.-Sarah Allen, Judson High School, Converse, TX

Grades 9-12 Jenna Oliver has spent her entire life waiting to leave the small town of Solitude, Arkansas, but events are conspiring against her. First her beloved grandfather dies, which causes her mother to sink into alcoholism and burdens Jenna with her care. Then she finds herself in a love triangle with twin brothers Ian and Luke McAlister. They have moved to Solitude so that Ian, who has suffered a traumatic event of which he has no memory, can seek treatment and answers. Luke knows what happened but keeps the secret; then, when the truth finally comes out, it sweeps Jenna up in its devastation. The first-person narration shifts between the three teens, which makes for confusing reading at times. And with an alcoholic mother and the twins' secret, the drama can sometimes feel like too much. But Guillory knows how to turn a phrase, and her writing is beautiful in places. The characters are well formed, particularly Ian and Luke, who rise above the clich' of good twin/bad twin. Fans of Caroline Cooney will enjoy this debut about secrets and second chances.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2013, American Library Association.)
