      Narrator Helen Johns deftly handles the swift-moving dialogue in this second installment of Summerill's Clash of Kingdoms series. Having rescued King Aodren with her newly discovered Channeler powers, Britta Flannery is navigating their unexpected magical bond, along with an evolving relationship with her childhood friend, Cohen. Through it all, she must continue defending her home with her emerging powers. Johns infuses the love triangle with tension and plenty of subtext, shifting accents and inflections with impressive ease. She is especially talented at conveying Britta's determination and emotional vulnerability, keeping her at the center of the story even when the story switches to another character's point of view.
