Maddie has big-city dreams, and this summer she's found her chance to visit New York.

An art magazine is holding a portrait painting contest, and the first prize is an all-expenses-paid trip to the Big Apple. Maddie plans to win, but her mother has different plans for her: a mother-daughter adventure in organic farming. Maddie is furious. How will she find an inspiring subject for her portrait amid the goat poop and chickens? And worse, her new-age mother's attempts at pig reiki are an embarrassment. But Maddie befriends the farmer's daughter, Anna, and between dodging her mother and doing her chores, she finds the perfect subject for the portrait contest.

This short novel is a high-interest, low-reading level book for middle-grade readers who are building reading skills, want a quick read or say they don't like to read!

Grades 6-9 Fifteen-year-old Maddie intends to win first prize in an art-magazine contest, which will pay for her dream trip to visit New York City's major art galleries. The problem? She hasn't started her drawing, the deadline is in a week, and her self-involved New Agey mother wants to spend that week experiencing the rewards of organic farming. Maddie soon finds herself at the Friesens' Quiet River Farm, where she shovels goat poop, gathers eggs, and silently curses her flaky mom, who turns out to like the idea of farming more than the work itself. Despite herself, Maddie realizes that farm living has its upsides, thanks to the Friesens' daughter, Anna, but the idea for an award-winning portrait eludes heruntil she meets Anna's prize cow, Frida. Goerzen writes well from a teen perspective, capturing Maddie's smart-alecky but self-conscious attitude, especially toward her oblivious mother. This entry into the Orca Currents hi-lo line is a quiet character piece, with minimal action and conflict and an uncomplicated resolution.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2011, American Library Association.)

Fifteen-year-old Maddie hates her flighty single mother's latest idea for a mother-daughter summer "adventure"--a week working at an organic farm--especially since it interferes with an art contest that could take Maddie to New York City. Once on the farm, Maddie is surprised to make new friends and gain inspiration. A quick, predictable read filled with clichis but nevertheless entertaining.
