Search and Rescue is the first novel in a series of mysteries featuring journalist and sleuth Claire Abbott.

When a young woman goes missing on a nature trail, small-town journalist Claire Abbott is first on the scene, as usual. The clues to the woman's whereabouts are misleading, but Claire has a sixth sense—what the fire chief calls a "radar for crime." Trusting her intuition, Claire insists that the search and rescue team look elsewhere for clues to the woman's disappearance. When they fail to follow up on her lead, she pursues it on her own, embarking on a snowy chase up a mountainside that puts herself and others in danger. She's more than just a journalist chasing a story. Claire is determined to do the right thing at any cost.

This short novel is a high-interest, low-reading level book for older teen readers and adults who are building reading skills, want a quick read or say they don't like to read!

Gr 8 Up-Claire is a 20-something young woman with a nose for news. Her incredible instincts have helped her to become a successful reporter, oftentimes arriving for a scoop before the police. On her way to a dinner date, she senses a major story and is sidetracked. A young girl named Amber has gone missing in the woods. When Claire arrives at the search-and-rescue headquarters, she has a psychic vision of where Amber has been taken. When the squad refuses her help based on "visions," Claire must do whatever it takes to make sure that Amber gets home safe. She is a relatable character, and her psychic ability grows at just the right pace for a short series opener. For new adult readers who prefer hi-lo books and reluctant or struggling teen readers.-Patrick Tierney, Dr. Martin Luther King Elementary School RI

Small-town reporter Claire Abbott is first on the scene when a young person goes missing on a nature trail. Our intrepid journalist has a nose for crime, and she's convinced that Amber Miller has been kidnapped by her ex-boyfriend. But search manager Matt Holden is uninterested in Claire's intuition. Because no one believes her, Claire must investigate on her own. VERDICT This series debut by best-selling Canadian author Anderson-Dargatz (The Recipe for Bees) is an exciting, fast-paced read with plenty of suspense, perfect for a reluctant teen reader or an adult literacy student.
