The Artful Goddaughter is the third novel in a series featuring Gina Gallo, who wants nothing more than to run her little jewelry store. But try as she might, Gina can't escape the family business, with hilarious consequences.

Mob goddaughter Gina Gallo stands to inherit two million bucks from her great-uncle Seb, a master forger. But there's a catch: Uncle Seb wants Gina to make things right and return an extremely valuable painting to the City Art Gallery. If she can't do it, her rat-face cousin Carmine gets the boodle. Reluctantly, Gina comes up with a plan for a reverse heist, as she has learned things never go as planned when her family gets involved. The wrong painting gets replaced, and Gina finds herself with two priceless masterpieces in hand! It won't be long before someone realizes what's going on.

This short novel is a high-interest, low-reading level book for older teen readers and adults who are building reading skills, want a quick read or say they don't like to read!

Gr 8 Up-Mob goddaughter Gina Gallo is doing her best to stay clean and separate herself from the family's "activities." She wants to focus on running her jewelry shop and planning her wedding, but her recently deceased great-uncle Seb has different plans. Seb, a famous art forger, left Gina $2 million in his will. The catch is that Seb stole a famous painting, and in order to inherit the money, Gina must pull a reverse-heist and return it to its rightful place at the City Art Gallery. Gina rounds up her family connections to determine how to get the painting back in the gallery while convincing her family that she doesn't want back into the crime life. This hi-lo book will hold little interest for readers. The plot consists of mostly random events that seem set up so various characters can hold conversations in an attempt to move the plot forward, and the resolution occurs quickly. Characters and language feel forced and stereotypical, as though taken from a B-movie version of The Godfather, and occasional swearing feels gratuitous rather than authentic. A minor subplot involving outsourcing money laundering to the Chinese comes off as racist. The story is lighthearted and comedic, but the mood alone is not enough to carry readers through. Even where hi-lo books are popular, libraries should pass.-Kelsey Johnson-Kaiser, Columbus Public Library, WI

Gina Gallo, mob goddaughter, expects to inherit $2 million from great-uncle Seb, a forger, but first she has to return a stolen painting to the City Art Gallery. Gina wants to be good; she really tries, but she keeps getting sucked into the family business. As a certified gemologist, she desires nothing more than to run her own jewelry store. When Seb suffers a fatal heart attack, Gina receives an authentic work by a famous artist, and now she has two paintings to return. Who ever heard of a reverse art theft? VERDICT This lighthearted and frothy caper, with its wacky family members, will remind readers of Janet Evanovich's humorous mysteries. This is the third series entry after The Goddaughter and The Goddaughter's Revenge, winner of the 2014 Arthur Ellis Award for Best Novella.
