A “smart, sassy, and suspenseful” debut novel about betrayal, female friendship, and an epic yacht race—for fans of Elin Hilderbrand and Susan Mallery (Shelf Awareness).
Hermosa Beach housewife Nancy Hadley is no pushover. So when her philandering husband, Roger, is caught in flagrante with an opportunistic widow on their racing sailboat, Nancy sticks it to him. She tells him she wants a divorce—with the sailboat, Bucephalus, part of the deal, too.
Roger would rather make Nancy’s life a living hell than give up his boat. But Nancy has other plans. After moving out of their opulent home, she and her posse of girlfriends invest in a racing boat of their own to live on, and she teaches them the fine points of sailing. Meanwhile, and unbeknownst to Nancy, a big real estate development is under way that would destroy her beloved harbor and new home. When scheming Roger returns to ask Nancy to help capture the last committee vote—held by Nancy’s old college friend—Nancy prepares for battle.
Nancy is not skittish about taking a few risks, so in a bold gambit, she makes a bet with Roger: a showdown in the thrilling Border Dash Race from Newport Harbor down to Ensenada, Mexico. The winner of the race will get everything they want.
The stage is set for the race of a lifetime—and the tantalizing possibility of new romance for Nancy—in a novel as heartwarming as it is breathlessly exciting.

A woman reeling from betrayal takes to the seas to find herself in Talick's debut novel. Nancy Hadley knew her life with her husband Roger wasn't perfect, but she thought it was enough. That is, until she catches Roger in a compromising position with another woman. Having overlooked Roger's infidelity before, Nancy knows she can't do it again. Nancy's friends rally behind her decision to leave Roger and help her find an unconventional place to stay aboard a yacht they all purchase together called the Gypsea. As Nancy becomes acclimated to marina life, Roger does everything he can to get her back. It will take Nancy's friends, now dubbed "The Mermaids," a big yacht race, and the spark of a new romance for Nancy to reconnect with herself and to realize the life she deserves. Beware the Mermaids is a compelling novel that explores later-in-life transitions and the value of female friendship. Readers will definitely connect with at least one of the Mermaids. Fans of contemporary women's fiction will be delighted.

DEBUT When Nancy Hadley catches her husband, Roger, in a compromising position, she takes the opportunity to take stock of her life. Nancy's friends Ruthie, Lois, and Judy band together to support her as she prepares to do battle with Roger, dubbing themselves "The Mermaids." Roger, meanwhile, is determined to bully Nancy into coming back home, by any means necessary. Nancy, realizing her marriage is a sham, finally stands up to Roger and dodges every curveball he throws her way, while attempting to thwart his plans to destroy the harbor where her newly acquired home and racing boat are docked. This story trails Nancy and her friends as they navigate new possibilities and meet life's challenges with grace and gusto. While the novel is intended to be a lighthearted romp, it flirts with outright silliness at times and falls short on originality with a few worn-out themes That said, overall, this is a charming, heartwarming story about the power of friendship and having the courage to make a fresh start, at any age. VERDICT Talick's debut is a fun, breezy, and inspiring beach read.--Julie Whiteley, Stephenville, TX
