Country-house treasures

Architects and ancestry • In the first of two articles, Steven Brindle looks at the remarkable history of a house that has never been sold, but has descended for nine centuries as an inheritance

The legacy • Siegfried Sassoon and Memoirs of a Fox-hunting Man

Slow and steady wins the race • If a cocker or springer appeals, but is deemed too hot to handle, it may be time to consider one of our minor spaniel breeds, urges Mary Skipwith

Full tweed ahead • Heritage and enduring appeal make up the fabric of COUNTRY LIFE, so what better way to weave the story of its 130th anniversary celebrations than with a bespoke tweed. Matthew Dennison checks it out

‘Such divuelish artes have bene and are’ • Be it a pattern scratched into a beam or a dead cat built into a wall, apotropaic marks and their kin were forms of ‘secular prayer’ long trusted to guard our homes and souls, discovers Susan Owens

Luxury Notebook

A few of my favourite things • Sir Kenny Dalglish is one of the most decorated figures in British football, having enjoyed success as a player with Celtic and Liverpool and as a manager with Liverpool and Blackburn Rovers. In 2018, he was knighted for his services to football, charity and the City of Liverpool. He lives in Southport with his wife, Marina.

Star power • Light up the night in dazzling jewellery inspired by the cosmos

The heat is on • Amelia Thorpe selects the latest stoves and fireplaces

Property news

Blockbuster addresses • Lights, camera, action! Thanks to cinema rooms that deserve top billing, these spectacular homes will ensure that for their new owners, staying in becomes the hottest ticket in town

Fruit shoots • With the widest range in the country, Frank P. Matthews is famous for its fruit trees, but its ornamentals...
